Last Thursday marked the very first CISK English Drama production. The drama team worked for the past year on casting, designing, practicing and perfecting the performance and their effort certainly paid off.

The troupe chose the famous work A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen for the show. The synopsis and history is as follows:

The drama group was led by their director, the flawless Ms. Alicia Vacaru (G11) who worked tirelessly to ensure the performance was the very best it could be. From organizing rehearsals to directing scenes, Alicia used all of her talent to ensure things ran smoothly from start to finish.

Yoki Wang (G12) and Andy Chong (G12) played the leads in the play and captured the hearts of their audience as Nora and Torvald Helmer, husband and wife caught in the web of an unhappy marriage.

The supporting actors helped the story fall into place as the play unfolded. Katherine Huang (G11) played the poised and experienced Mrs. Lind and Rebecca Pu (G10) brought to life the incomparable Dr. Rank. Both characters unknowingly nudged (and sometimes pushed) the Helmer’s towards their inevitable doom, aided in full by the sinister, and later redeemed,Mr. Nils Krogstad played by the brilliant Joshua Laroche (G10).

Ada Gu (G10) played the attentive and kind Anna, the Helmer’s devoted housekeeper, and Cheryl Young made her debut on the stage as the sweet and adorable youngest child of the Helmer’s, Emmy.

Wilson Zhang (G11) and Mike Chen (G11) brought the Helmer’s living room to life and were on top of sound effects and music as the handy stage crew. Chloe Vacaru (G10) and Scylia Dubourgnoux (G11) organized costumes and materials as the prop team. The show would not have been possible without them!

The audience gathered with their drinks and popcorn to watch the show. Emotions were high as they watched the happy and warm home vanish before their eyes, replaced by a cold and empty room – filled only with the power and finality of Nora’s final stand against her husband.

The play was an enormous success and enjoyed by all who both attended and participated. CISK is so proud of the hard work and talent of all our students and can’t wait to see what is next for the drama team!
